Call for volunteers:

Needed: LIFD and CDT Fluid Dynamics PhD student volunteers for the ‘future climate engineers’ outreach project.

Funding: LIFD have invested a good amount of funding, and it is being supported by a number of industry partners (Arup, Environment Agency, JBA Consulting). Your time will be paid for by the funding we have been awarded for attending any training and delivering any activity (at standard PhD demonstrator rate).

About: The future climate engineers is a really exciting project, instead of demonstrating some of our table top activities as a one off, we are going to showcase these demos, explain their design and purpose, and then get the same School children (Key Stage 3) involved in the design of a new flood demonstrator appropriate for use by Key Stage 2 visitors, with the help of yourselves plus qualified engineers in JBA, Arup and the Environment Agency. The final collated design will then be further developed and built by us in August 2025-July 2026 and installed at Nell Bank in Ilkley.

Commitment for the future climate engineers project (2-3 days between January-July 2025)

  • Short training session in January 2025 to include some new table top demos owned by the JBA Trust (JBA will deliver the training – will include a new VR sandbox)
  • A day on either the 7th or the 14th March 2025 on campus showcasing 4 of our existing tabletop fluids demos to Schools (we need one PhD student per demo on each day)
  • A half day to work with external partners to prepare the design session in Schools (optional)
  • Half a day in July 2025 in one School to do some design for a new fluids demo on flooding (we only need one student per School visit.

Get in touch with us at fluid-dynamics@leeds.ac.uk if you would like to help out.
