Deputy Director of Leeds Institute for Fluid Dynamics (LIFD) 

Workload credit 0.1 fte (internal only)

Working with the Director of LIFD and another deputy Director, this role plays an important strategic and coordinating role in leading the development, promotion and delivery of LIFD’s strategy and objectives. 

As one of two deputy directors, this role will focus on internal engagement and development of LIFD research strategy and capabilities. 

The duties of the deputy Director will include the following. 

  • Be a member of the LIFD executive group and management board, assisting with the general management of the institute and contributing to academic leadership.  
  • Take responsibility for developing an LIFD Research and Innovation strategy consistent with overall University strategies. 
  • Take responsibility for research and innovation management within LIFD. This will include working proactively with the LIFD RIDM, colleagues in RIS, Pro Deans for Research and Innovation and relevant Faculty and University activities. 
  • Working with the LIFD manager to take overall responsibility for the management of LIFD’s budget for research development activities. 
  • Liaising with LIFD groups to ensure that they have appropriate strategies and feed effectively into LIFD plans 
  • Work with the LIFD RIDM, colleagues in RIS and external academic and industry partners to coordinate activities to grow new research activities such as sandpits and workshops.  
  • Work with colleagues across LIFD to develop strategies for growing experimental fluid dynamics capabilities, including leading the development of business cases to support new initiatives.  
  • Work with colleagues across LIFD to facilitate development of and access to the best HPC facilities.  
  • Take responsibility for managing internal facing KPI’s including publication and funding strategies 
  • Take responsibility for managing the support for Fellowship applications to LIFD and for encouraging incoming fellowship applications. 
  • Take responsibility for monitoring of activity with regard to research and innovation targets, and monitoring of research and innovation quality for the Integrated Planning Exercise and other relevant university review processes.
